Aunt Barbara
I would like to share with you a little bit of who my Aunt Barbara was to me. My Aunt Barbara was my dad's older and only sister. She was the only girl in a family of 5 brothers. My dad Richie was her fourth brother. He would tell me stories about what she was like as an older sister. One of the stories I remember most is how she would take him down to Coney Island and let him ride the Cyclone. He said she would hang out with her friends and let him ride the Cyclone roller coaster over and over till he was a pro at it. He said he could practically play cards while riding on it, she let him ride so often. He told me although she was his older sister she was like one of the boys. In fact having five brothers probably paid off for her because there was a time when her and her friend where walking to their car I believe after work and a man tried to rob them. She gave him a good what for and he ended up running away empty handed. She was a tough cookie. I remember being a little girl and her coming to visit grandma and grandpa, her parents. She was always dress so nice, her hair done and her nails would look so pretty, She was the first woman I ever saw that had her nails painted with a design on them. This was in the 60's. She was ahead of her time. I really didn't see that until later in life. Much later. I would laugh about it and say I think she invented it. She gave me a pressed penny that had a prayer on it that I still have today. I remember her telling me she would have her daughter Theresa's son Albert make them on the penny press she had. Her son Charles who I know as Butchie, didn't live local so I never did see him much but when I did I was happy to see him. He definitely has his moms magnetic personality.I remember she worked for Con Ed for the longest time. I would pass by Kings Highway and E 17th St (I think) and say my Aunt works there. We would go visit her at her home in Brighton Beach once in a while. My dad would help her with painting and other things that needed to be done or repaired around the house. I'm sorry for his loss of his sister. And for everyone else that may have been touched by her life. God Speed Aunt Barbara. <3
